Realistic Lifespan Here
A manufacturer may print a thirty-year rating, but Central Florida UV, heat cycling, and humidity commonly deliver a shorter practical life than the same shingle on a northern roof. Plan around the mid-to-high teens for older three-tab installs and somewhat longer for quality architectural shingles that were correctly ventilated. Anyone promising you a printed-number lifespan in Apopka sun is selling, not advising.
Those Dark Streaks Are Algae
The black streaking on so many Apopka roofs is gloeocapsa magma — algae feeding on limestone filler, thriving in our humidity and shade. It is primarily cosmetic, not structural. Algae-resistant shingles with copper granules genuinely help on new installs. Aggressive pressure washing, on the other hand, strips granules and shortens your roof life; treat, do not blast.
Wind Rating and Why Nailing Decides It
A shingle rated for 130 mph achieves that only when installed with the correct number of nails, placed in the nailing zone, at the right depth. Overdriven or high nails void the rating and are invisible from the ground once the roof is finished. On a Florida roof, nailing discipline matters more than the brand on the wrapper.
Ventilation Is Half the System
A shingle roof over a hot, poorly vented Apopka attic cooks from underneath and ages early. Balanced intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge lets that heat leave. When we assess a shingle roof, attic ventilation is part of the conversation — replacing the surface while leaving the oven underneath is a wasted investment.
Repair, or Start Over?
Wind lifted a dozen shingles off an eight-year-old roof: repair it. Granules filling your gutters, brittle shingles cracking when lifted, and stains in two different rooms: you are paying to delay the inevitable. We will tell you which of those two roofs you own.
